ONLY half of the eight Coors/WPRC Mid-Cheshire League clubs survived the second round of the Soccer Company Cheshire Amateur Cup, those going through to the last 16 being Barnton, Bollington Athletic, Middlewich Town and Knutsford.

Barnton were stretched by Manchester League first division leaders Old Altrinchamians at Townfield Lane and their 3-1 victory was only clinched in the last 20 minutes when substitute Clint Burton scored twice. Earlier Paul Hennin had put Barnton ahead with a delightful back-heeled goal before Charlie Vaughan equalised.

Middlewich Town were comfortable 3-0 home winners against Division Two rivals Club AZ, while Bollington Athletic eased through 2-0 against Ellesmere Port and Knuts-ford ended a poor run with a 4-2 victory at Willaston.

Defeats were suffered by Malpas (3-1 at Ashville), Crewe FC (2-0 at General Chemicals) and by Warrington Borough (3-1 at home to Upton AA), while Club AZ went out at Middlewich.

Managed by Nick Armitage, Barnton will represent the Mid-Cheshire League en bloc on Saturday when they host the West-Cheshire League representative XI in the second round of the FA's new National League Systems Cup at Townfield Lane.

In a restricted first division programme, Poynton won 2-0 at Garswood United with goals from Barry Williams and Ian Middlehurst and moved up to fourth spot.

Broadheath Central stayed firmly rooted in bottom place when they were overwhelmed 6-1 at Daten.

Newcomers Sidak Sports continue to set the pace in Division Two, a 3-2 home win over Whitchurch Alport taking them six points clear at the top. Trafford moved up into second spot after a hard-earned 1-0 wn at Winsford United courtesy of a goal from Tom Walmsley.

In the Reserve Division, Daten lost 2-1 at Styal and Middlewich Town now share top place on points after a 3-2 win at Rylands.
