LIAM McGuire has quit Wincham Park for Lancaster City.

The central midfielder, who seriously damaged his knee ligaments at Christmas and missed the remainder of the season, is rejoining Gary Finley, who brought him to Witton 12 months ago. Finley is assistant manager at Lancaster.

Albion boss Jim Vince said: 'Liam is a good player but he would have struggled to get into our team so I wish him good luck.

'If he can succeed in Conference North then that means a lot of others in our team could as well.'

McGuire's departure accompanies that of fringe men Rick Bailey and Andy Parkinson, who stepped up from the reserves last season.

Bailey has joined Congleton, Parkinson is at Alsager and clearly both saw their opportunities limited at Witton, where there are four young central midfield players and three flankmen.

Training starts on Saturday at Witton and the first sessions will include at least six youngsters released by North West Football League clubs.

Vince also expects a 'very experienced' player to attend on Saturday with a view to joining.

Wes Simpson, who quit football two years ago, also begins his comeback in the pre-season training.

Witton will share Wincham Park with new club Runcorn Linnets next season. Linnets, successors to Runcorn FC Halton, were admitted to the North West Counties League at the weekend.

'I have no problem with sharing. We were their last chance and it is right we should help,' said Vince.
