Malpas 0 Daten 6
HITTING rock-bottom is never easy and Malpas now know how that feels after being crushed by Daten.
Robbie McWilliams’ side has suffered a nightmare season for injuries and the situation came to a head on Saturday.
Missing keeper Eddie Brownrigg, John Stubbs and Ian Ramsay, as well as the longer-term casualties of the season, Malpas were forced to call upon the reserves, providing most with their first-team debuts.
McWilliams himself was suffering a hamstring injury so deputised between the posts, but a young side featuring just five regular first-teamers proved no match for Daten.
“The team played as well as they could,” said the Malpas boss.
“But there were players playing who have not figured a lot this season or who have never played with some of the guys they were selected with and it was a tall order.
“In terms of availability it was perhaps our worst week yet. But the effort was there and the fact it wasn’t more is a testament to the team.”
McWilliams expects to be fit for Saturday’s trip to Moore United (kick-off 2pm). Brownrigg should also be back in action in goal and Stubbs and Ramsay are also in line for recalls.
Third-placed Tarporley Vics went down 2-1 at Whitchurch Alport.
