LUIS SUAREZ’S season is over after the Liverpool striker was charged with violent conduct for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

The Uruguayan is facing the prospect of a six to eight-game ban after the Football Association ruled that a standard three-match suspension was “clearly insufficient”.

Suarez has until 6pm today to respond to the charge but a lengthy spell on the sidelines is now inevitable. He has already apologised for his “inexcusable behaviour” and been heavily fined by Liverpool, who insist he still has a future at Anfield.

In his report to the FA on Sunday’s eventful 2-2 draw, referee Kevin Friend confirmed he hadn’t witnessed the off-the-ball incident, leaving the governing body clear to take retrospective action.

An independent regulatory commission will meet tomorrow to rule on the frontman’s punishment and Suarez will discover his fate prior to Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United.

An FA statement read: “The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed.

“It is alleged that the conduct of Suarez constitutes violent conduct and it is the FA’s contention that the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient in these circumstances.”

Suarez won’t take any criminal proceedings for sinking his teeth into Ivanovic’s right arm. Merseyside Police confirmed that officers had spoken to the Serbian defender but were told he had no apparent physical injuries and did not wish to make a complaint.

Adidas, who have a boot deal with Suarez, joined Liverpool MD Ian Ayre and manager Brendan Rodgers in condemning the frontman’s antics.

A statement read: “Adidas takes this type of incident very seriously. We will be reminding him of the standards we expect from our players. Luis has admitted his actions were unacceptable and we support the way Liverpool are planning to handle the situation.”
