TEN-MAN Liverpool were cruelly denied a draw against Manchester United in a clash of the under-21s.
Alex Inglethorpe’s Reds had Stephen Sama sent off for a second bookable offence during the second half at Langtree Park last night.
And just when it appeared Liverpool had clung on United struck the only goal of the game in the dying seconds with a mis-hit Michele Fornasier effort looping over Jonjo Shelvey on the line.
Shelvey was one of a number of players with first-team experience on show in St Helens with Raheem Sterling, Andre Wisdom and Suso all playing 90 minutes.
Another who has tasted action with Brendan Rodgers’ side, Adam Morgan, went closest for the Reds when his shot hit the post.
Inglethorpe said: “It is a big ask for a team to play with 10 men but I thought we rode out for the first 10 or 15 minutes and got our shape.
“We looked good on the counter attack. We didn’t surrender the ball and were sensible with it.
“We had some really good chances to score.”
Shelvey came in for a special tribute fro Inglethorpe.
“He showed more than just a good attitude tonight,” he said.
“He showed terrific ability and he really impressed me with his quality.”
