THE first batch of Liverpool players returned to Melwood yesterday, to be greeted by new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

Jamie Carragher, Lucas Leiva, Charlie Adam and Jose Enrique were among those who met with Rodgers for an introductory team meeting, before undergoing a light, indoor training assessment.

The players will begin full training tomorrow, as they prepare for their first pre-season fixture, against Toronto FC on July 21.

Joe Cole, who spent last season on loan with Lille, was also among those present. The former Chelsea man has expressed his desire to fight for his place under Rodgers, who has intimated that the 30-year-old will be given the chance to fight to do just that during pre-season, with many of the Reds’ key first-team yet to return to duty.

Other returnees included Dani Pacheco, who was loaned to Rayo Vallecano last season, and Danny Wilson, who enjoyed a spell at Blackpool.

Teenage winger Raheem Sterling, tipped to make the breakthrough to the first team this season, also attended.
