STEVEN GERRARD is dreaming of a testimonial at Anfield, so he can give all the proceeds away to charity – just like his pal Jamie Carragher.

The Reds skipper staged the first event in support of The Steven Gerrard Foundation at the weekend.

A golf day at Quinta do Lago in Portugal was graced by former team-mates Didi Hamann, John Arne Riise and Harry Kewell, former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton, champion jockey AP McCoy, local comedian John Bishop and Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton. But now Gerrard wants to build on the success of the event with a testimonial.

“The dream is to one day have a testimonial at Liverpool,” he said. “Like Jamie did – giving all the money back to people who need it.”

Gerrard made his Reds debut almost 13 years ago and has already fulfilled the usual criteria for a testimonial, but has no plans for hanging his boots up just yet.

The Steven Gerrard Foundation was established in February to aid charities like Fairbridge, Claire House and Zoe’s Place.

Gerrard explained: “I’d seen what Jamie had done with his foundation and I wanted to do a similar thing to give more help to the kids in our area, kids that need it.

“People in a position like myself – it’s alright being comfortable in your own life but you’ve got to try and help people who need it. I come from a council estate background but things have changed for me and I’m in a position to help other people.

“You have experiences through your career – you visit hospitals, you see the kids and it has an impact on you. You go home and feel for them. You look at it and think: ‘Now’s the time for me to give something back.’

“I’ve probably got four or five years left of my career. Now’s a good time while I’ve still got my name in the game.”

Jamie Redknapp, whose Anfield career briefly overlapped with Gerrard’s, said the Liverpool skipper’s name would always be held in the highest esteem.

“I wish I could have played with him more,” said Redknapp. “It would have been a joy. He’s one of those players who you give it to and they get on with it. He will go down as one of the greats – no two ways about it.

“He’s one of those guys who you meet along the way in football who’s a top man and a top player.

“When you’re in a privileged position it's nice to give something back – but a lot don't.

“For him to take that opportunity – he deserves a lot of respect for that. He’s just a thoroughly good fella, it’s as simple as that.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, will host an Anfield friendly against Valencia the Saturday before the 2010/11 season kicks off.

Valencia finished third in La Liga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid and will come to Anfield on Saturday, August 6 for a 5.30pm kick-off.

The friendly is one of four announced by the Reds so far, the others being Guangdong Sunray Cave on July 13, Malaysia XI on July 16 and Valerenga on August 1.
