STEWART DOWNING lasted less than half an hour against West Ham United because of illness.

The winger felt unwell on Saturday but declared himself fit for the game with Sam Allardyce’s side at Anfield.

But the 28-year-old came off after just 25 minutes and was replaced by Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers explained that given Downing’s recent form, they wanted to give him every opportunity to face the Hammers.

“He took ill yesterday, but he wanted to give it a go. He’s in good form at the moment,” said Rodgers.

“He took some tablets but when he was out there, he was very weak. When he came off you could see it in him that he wasn’t feeling well.”
