LIVERPOOL will head for South Africa after the end of the Premier League season to play a lucrative friendly against Ajax Cape Town.
The match in Cape Town has been pencilled in for Tuesday, May 21 – just two days after the Reds’ final league game against Queens Park Rangers. It will be a flying visit for Brendan Rodgers’ squad as they are scheduled to depart on May 20 and return to Merseyside two days later.
Ajax Cape Town, nicknamed the Urban Warriors, are currently battling against relegation from the South Africa Premier League.
Liverpool will be up against a familiar face in former Anfield keeper Sander Westerveld. The 38-year-old shot-stopper, who made 103 appearances for the Reds between 1999 and 2001, has been with Ajax Cape Town since 2011.
It will be Liverpool’s first trip to South Africa since May 1994 when boss Roy Evans and his squad met Nelson Mandela and presented him with a shirt.
