MAXI RODRIGUEZ’S expected departure from Liverpool has moved a step closer after Newell’s Old Boys confirmed they are confident of signing him.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who has one year to go on his current Anfield deal, is understood to be keen to rejoin the Argentinian club where he first began his career.

Newell’s revealed they have discussed terms with Rodriguez, who grew frustrated with his lack of game time last season, and are hoping he will be granted a free transfer by the Reds.

“We are waiting for official news about the end of Maxi’s link (with Liverpool),” said Newell’s secretary Pablo Morosano.

“There is an ongoing contact and we have a deal agreed with him. But as long as his exit from Liverpool has not been settled we cannot announce it."
