BRENDAN RODGERS hailed the ‘unplayable’ Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan’s brilliance earned Liverpool a point in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at Anfield.

Suarez struck midway through the second half, after the Reds had trailed to Yohan Cabaye’s excellent first-half effort. The former Ajax man took one touch to control Jose Enrique’s searching long ball on his chest, one to round Toon ‘keeper Tim Krul, and one to slide the ball home for his 10th goal in all competitions this season. Newcastle would later have captain Fabricio Coloccini sent off for a crude lunge on the 25-year-old.

Afterwards Rodgers paid tribute to his talisman, who has now scored more than half of all Liverpool’s Premier League goals this season.

“I thought Luis was unplayable,” he said. “When Coloccini got sent off he was frustrated because Luis was playing so well.

“He’s a good defender ,Coloccini, he’s been a great player over a few years for Newcastle but Luis is so bright, so clever.

“He’s a real world class striker and on that form today he really provokes and frustrates defenders.

“He is an absolute joy to work with. He’s aiming to get better every day he trains. And he is still a young player. He’s committed his best years to us here, which is brilliant. He just has a real hunger for the game, and a hunger to score goals.

“But he is not your traditional No 9 who stands up there, stood static.”

Rodgers was not too disheartened at seeing another two points dropped on home soil, but admitted his side need to add goals from other areas if they are to climb the Premier League table. They currently sit 12th, having taken 11 points from 10 games so far.

“We need to get goals from other areas,” he said. “But I can’t complain whenever we perform and play to the level we did today.

“It us gives us great hope that once we get that profile and that type of player then it is going to finish off a lot of great work for us.

“I’m not worried we are over reliant on Luis. He gets paid to score goals. Obviously I would like them to be a bit more spread out. And everyone knows that [getting more strikers] is the key feature for us going forward.”

Rodgers added: “I can’t speak about last season but I’m really pleased about how our game is developing, the way we are moving it fast and quickly through the lines.

“Importantly we are creating chances playing this way. It is five draws now in 10 League games and we have deserved to win three of them at least. They are the margins we are working at at the moment.

“Once we can turn those draws into wins by converting those chances, we’ll be fine – but that is about getting in the profile of players we need.

“If we can get those over the next couple of windows, it bodes really well for us because it will finish off the wonderful football we are playing.”
