CHARLIE ADAM has hit back at accusations he took a tumble to win the free-kick that led to Liverpool's goal in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The Reds midfielder went down on the edge of the box after a challenge from Rio Ferdinand midway through the second half and Steven Gerrard stepped up to fire past David de Gea.

United boss Alex Ferguson said it was “very soft” and Ferdinand was also critical of Adam.

“There was slight contact but not enough to make a fella who is 12 or 13 stone to fall down on the floor like that,” Ferdinand said. “But that's the way the game is today.”

However, Adam (right), who was outstanding for Liverpool in the centre of midfield, insisted his conscience was clear.

“I felt a touch and if I hadn't gone down I would have been clear through on goal so there must have been contact,” Adam said. “That's the way I look at it. I felt contact when I went past Rio and that's the way it goes.

“I'm not that type of player. I'm not just going to go down easily. It was a foul and that is why the referee gave it and the goal was just different class. That is why Steven Gerrard is one of the best players in the world.”
