WIGAN chairman Dave Whelan has responded to stinging criticism from Liverpool by bizarrely claiming he was “misinterpreted” during their search for a new manager.

Reds managing director Ian Ayre branded Whelan a “comedian” for the manner in which he provided the media with a running commentary on the latest developments in the process of finding Kenny Dalglish’s successor.

Liverpool were particularly angered by Whelan’s claims that yhey had offered the job to Wigan boss Roberto Martinez when in fact they had only held talks with the Spaniard.

The way Whelan behaved was in stark contrast to the professionalism and dignity shown by Swansea City, who kept discussions private until Brendan Rodgers had informed them of his desire to take over at Anfield.

“I cannot help it if some people misinterpreted what I said, which was that Liverpool wanted our manager, which they did as they asked permission to speak with him, and talked to him on a number of occasions,” Whelan said.

“My response is a simple one – I wish Liverpool all the very best with their new manager.

“They have appointed a super lad for the job, a very good manager, and I am very happy for them.

“We’ve kept Roberto Martinez, so I wish them luck for next season.”
