LIVERPOOL were left to rue a string of missed chances as they had to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw with 10-man Newcastle at Anfield.

The Reds showed great character to battle back after falling behind against the run of play to Yohan Cabaye's stunning strike in the first half.

Luis Suarez deservedly restored parity just past the hour mark with his 10th goal of the season and Brendan Rodgers' side threw everything at Newcastle in search of a winner.

The hosts' cause was assisted by the dismissal of Fabricio Coloccini late on after the defender planted his studs in the back of Suarez's leg.

But a combination of poor finishing, heroics from keeper Tim Krul and the woodwork denied them as they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Rodgers kept faith with the same line up which had started the 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison a week earlier.

Former Reds midfielder Gary McAllister made a special presentation to Steven Gerrard on the pitch before kick-off to mark the skipper's 600th appearance.

Liverpool started brightly as they dominated possession and penned Newcastle back.

The passing was slick with the front three of Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Suso linking up expertly.

Suso saw his shot deflected behind early on before Sterling's 30-yarder flashed wide.

Jason Perch was then fortunate to escape without a booking after cynically upending Suarez 25 yards out.

The Uruguayan took the resulting free-kick but his curling effort around the wall flew just past the angle of post and bar.

Nuri Sahin was much improved after his below par display in the derby and midway through the first half the Turk's pass sent Suarez clear down the right. The striker burst into the box but Krul kept out his low drive with his legs.

Newcastle were forced into a reshuffle when Perch limped off and was replaced by Danny Simpson, who went to right-back with Vurnon Anita switching flanks.

The Reds continued to press and just before the half hour mark Suarez got above Steven Taylor to meet Gerrard's cross but couldn't direct his header on target.

The tempo and intensity dropped with Newcastle finally able to gain a foothold in the game.

Alan Pardew's side had barely threatened as an attacking force but two minutes before the break they were in front.

Hatem Ben Arfa raced down the right and his deep cross found Cabaye unmarked at the back post.

The Frenchman took a touch to steady himself and unleashed an unstoppable right-footer into the top corner.

Newcastle were forced into a second change early in the second half as Sammy Ameobi replaced the injury Demba Ba.

Attacking the Kop, the Reds began to build momentum with Suarez and Sahin picking holes in the Toon rearguard. Suarez was denied by a smart save from Krul before Sahin dragged his shot narrowly wide.

At the other end Martin Skrtel did brilliantly to get back and dispossess Ameobi as the visitors broke dangerously.

Jonjo Shelvey came on for Suso and the equaliser arrived in the 67th minute courtesy of Suarez's brilliance.

Jose Enrique's pin-point 50-yard pass picked out the Uruguayan's run. Suarez held off the attentions of Coloccini, took the ball on his chest, jinked his way past Krul and rolled it home.

Anfield erupted and the Reds should have taken the lead soon after.

Suarez got to the byline to tee up Shelvey eight yards out but the young midfielder scuffed his shot at Krul.

Stewart Downing replaced Sahin and with 14 minutes to go another glorious chance went begging.

Joe Allen and Suarez combined to put Sterling through. However, the winger dallied too long and Taylor was able to get back and deflect his shot behind.

A woeful pass from Enrique allowed Newcastle to counter but Jones came to the Reds' rescue as he thwarted Ben Arfa.

The dismissal of Coloccini on 84 minutes only served to increase Liverpool's domination

Gerrard's free-kick found Shelvey unmarked at the back post but his first time effort was straight at Krul.

Shelvey then failed to generate sufficient power on his header to seriously trouble Krul after being found by Downing.

Deep into stoppage time, Suarez's deflected free-kick evaded Shelvey and bounced over Krul but struck the bar as the Toon held on for a point.
