TERRY Murphy declared Middlewich Town's 5-2 victory against second-placed Linotype as the best since he arrived at Seddon Street.

'That has to be the best yet. We played so well and it could have been more. Another five would not have been amiss, but I'm happy with what we got.

'There will not be many able to say that after playing Lino, because they are a good side with some players experienced at a much higher level.'

Middlewich's performance, not just scoreline, will have made Lino rethink their title chances - and warned champions and leaders Barnton of a titanic struggle ahead when the neighbours clash at Christmas.

Murphy was able to name Wes Simpson, the former Vics, Witton Albion and Winsford United centre-back, in his line-up, though he played in midfield.

Simpson, arguably a Conference-standard player, is trying to regain his fitness after eight months on the sidelines following a knee injury.

'He did all right. The longer we can hold on to him the better. But even if he does not go back to Witton, there are already some UniBond League Premier Division sides asking about him,' said Murphy.

Simpson's presence will be only temporary but he has signed in time for Saturday's Cheshire Amateur Cup home tie against Grange, a West Cheshire League Second Division outfit.

Murphy said: 'I don't know anything about them and I am struggling finding anyone that does.'

Murphy has a fully-fit squad to pick from but is unlikely to make many changes. A 1.30pm kick-off allows for extra time and if a replay is needed, it will be on Saturday week.

Murphy is beginning to believe he has assembled a side now capable of sustaining a challenge to Barnton.

'We are big and strong throughout. I look at the bench now and can hardly believe I'm not picking the players sat here. They will have to be patient.'

Subs at Lino were Matt Hitchen, Mark Tomlinson, Joey Roberts, Lee Duckworth and Will Killey.

Middlewich have also solved their goalkeeping problem for the remainder of the season at least, having signed Paul Simpson from Northwich Vics Reserves.
