THE idea of rearranging kick-off times has been put forward as a way of heading off a prospective shortage of referees in an expanded Halton & District Junior Football League next season.
The suggestion was made by Mike Mainwaring, the league's mini-soccer and referees' secretary.
He said: 'After Thursday's AGM, it is looking like the league will have around an extra 16 teams this coming season.
'As everybody knows, 11-a-side football will take over the mini-soccer when it comes to referee allocation.
'I would like to suggest to all mini-soccer teams that they look at the possibility of playing either later in the day on a Saturday - the new 2.30pm slot that was mentioned - on a Sunday.
'If only 10% did this, it would relieve the pressure of pitch and referee allocation, helping everyone in the long run.
'This is only a suggestion from me and not the committee but would give teams more chance of having a referee for games - although I cannot promise it.'
