CARLSBERG West Cheshire League Division One title contenders Cammell Laird Res. recovered from a run of disappointing performances to post a superb 5-0 win at Old Altrinchamians in the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup third round.

Lairds reached the last eight courtesy of efforts from Paul Tosney, Chris Ford-Kelly, John Couch, Timmy Bigland and Paul McGregor.

Heswall are also through after winning 4-2 at New Brighton, Kieran Fleetwood (2), Peter McNulty and Colin O'Hanlon netting.

Last season's beaten finalists, Poulton Victoria, scored through Paul Finnan, but were knocked out of their second cup competition in as many weeks after crashing 2-1 at Division Two leaders Mond Rangers. Darren Moore and Russ Whitehead were Mond's marksmen.

West Kirby progressed to the last eight for the second year running, after Paul Casey and Philly Hudson (pen) found the net in a hard-earned 2-1 result at Upton AA. Mallaby lived to fight another day after finishing 1-1 with Mid-Cheshire outfit Styal. Gareth Drury and Danny McNicholas bagged the goals for Vauxhall Motors Res. in a tense 2-2 stalemate with Division Two minnows Chester Nomads.

Chris Dodd and Chris Sharp, son of Everton legend Graeme, plundered the goals as Capenhurst Villa triumphed 2-1 at Middlewich Town.

Division One title contenders Christleton moved into third place, just two points adrift of leaders Heswall after Shaun Kilgannon and Craig Warrington each struck twice in a rousing 5-1 triumph at Aintree Villa (Tony Carroll).

At the other end of the table, Richie White and Carl Smyth found the net for bottom club Ellesmere Port but still finished on the losing side as the improving MANWEB emerged 5-2 victors, courtesy of efforts from Joe Kelly(2), Sam Siddell(2) and Jordan Wright.

An injury to the referee after 30 minutes forced the abandonment of Manor Ath's tussle with Chris-tleton Res. in Division Two with Manor trailing 2-0. Fellow strugglers Blacon YC escaped from bottom spot after goals from Jamie Rogers, John Harrison and Andrew Bale secured a 3-1 result at Helsby.

Dave Thompson scored a fine hat trick as Maghull Res. romped home 6-1 at Heswall Res.
