STEVEN GERRARD insists he has no regrets about his England career so far, as the Liverpool captain prepares to take his country into their make-or-break Euro 2012 clash with Ukraine.

The Reds skipper will lead Roy Hodgson’s side in their crunch Group D tie against the tournament co-hosts in Donetsk tonight. England know they must avoid defeat if they are to progress to the quarter-finals, where a potential clash with reigning champions Spain awaits.

For Gerrard it will be his 95th England cap. He stands seventh on the all-time list of appearance makers, two behind Ashley Cole, whom he will line up alongside in Donetsk.

And though the 32-year-old has not managed to add a major international honour to his vast collection of domestic medals, he is adamant that he would not change anything about his England career to date.

“I’ve enjoyed every time I’ve played for England,” he said.

“There have been highs and lows but the experience of playing with this group of players has been fantastic. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

A draw in Donetsk would guarantee England’s qualification for the knock-out stage, though with Spain awaiting the group runners-up, the incentive for finishing top of the group is clear.

England underwhelmed in their opening match against France, before battling back to claim a vital 3-2 win over Sweden in Kiev on Friday, and Gerrard insists that Hodgson’s men will be looking to beat Ukraine, and give themselves the best possible chance of finishing above France.

He said: “The aim is always to finish top of the group.

“It is important we do not get ahead of ourselves and start worrying about who we can meet in the quarter-finals.

“There is a very important and very difficult job to do tomorrow night first. The aim is to win the game and see where that takes us.”

Gerrard was full of praise for Hodgson, who endured a short-lived spell as his club manager at Liverpool, and his backroom staff, though he refuted claims that the 64-year-old had engineered a more relaxed setup than his predecessor, Fabio Capello.

“I think a better word to use is professional,” he said. “The lads are working very hard. They are training very well. We are recovering very well.

“We have got an excellent team behind the main football team.”
