A MAN arrested of stealing thousands of pounds from Chester FC has been released without charge.

The 27-year-old man from Hoole, who had been working for the club, was arrested earlier this year following an allegation made by the club on January 4.

He was released on bail pending further enquiries, later having his bail period extended twice as the investigation continued.

But this week a spokeswoman for Cheshire Constabulary confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service will not be bringing any charges against the man.

The sum of money which had allegedly been taken was believed to be about £20,000.

News of financial anomalies in the club’s accounts was made public when fans of the community-owned football club attended a City Fans United meeting held at the Exacta Stadium at the end of January.

At the time, fans heard the club stood to lose up to £75,000 by the end of the season, partly due to irregularities in the accounts.

Since then, fans heard the club had implemented tighter financial controls to prevent a repeat of the incident.
