JON Walters is relieved to have made a quick impression on the Chester City faithful after moving from red-hot rivals Wrexham this summer.

The Birkenhead-born striker's two-goal haul at Bury on Tuesday was the perfect way to break the ice with Blues fans.

'It's always good to score and to do it so early in the season was good for me,' said Walters, who drew a blank on his debut against Accrington Stanley on Saturday. 'Obviously, I've come here from Wrexham but I'm an honest player and I think the fans can see that.

'I will make runs and put in loads of hard work. That's my game. I'm just made up that things have gone well for me here so far.'

Walters' opening strike at Gigg Lane was one of the most unusual goals you will ever see.

When Bury centre-back Dave Challinor collided with keeper Alan Fettis and fell to the floor, the ball spilled free for the 22-year-old to roll into an empty net.

But Walters snatched at the opportunity, not realising just how much time he had, and scuffed a low shot into the body of Challinor.

As the ball bounced off the stricken defender and started to trickle towards the goal, Fettis and Walters chased after it and the pair slid in together across the goal-line, with the Blues player beating his opponent to make it 2-1.

'I was chasing 'Chally' and 'Fetts' and the ball just came to me,' said Walters. 'I snatched at it really, but I could see Fetts running to the line to clear the ball and I thought that if I slid in, he'd slide over the line too and the ball would end up in the net. I just got a touch on it before it went in.'

Walters' second strike was in complete contrast to his first.

When Laurence Wilson led a break-out from defence and crossed into the penalty area, Walters cut inside a couple of tackles before rifling a crisp shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

It was a fitting way to cap a man-of-the-match performance for the former Hull City man, who is glad to be at Chester having turned down the chance to extend his stay with Wrexham this summer.

One of 16 new faces in manager Mark Wright's squad, Walters said: 'The team spirit here is amazing already, which is great considering how many new lads are here. All the lads get on well and there are a few characters in the dressing room.

'The lads are really enjoying training and ever since we all came together, we have got on well.'

The Blues take on Hereford tomorrow but Walters says it has been impossible to avoid casting his mind forwards to the cross-border derby with Wrexham at the Saunders Honda Stadium a week on Sunday.

'The banter has already started for the Wrexham game and I've had people ringing up to tell me they are going to give me a kick in the game,' he joked. 'I've been telling them what I'm going to do!'
