A JUNIOR football team which allows children to focus on playing rather than winning is trying to raise £2,000 to play in a tournament in May.
Rossway United's under 12s plan to travel to Woolacombe in Devon with Sports Tours to compete in an invitational tournament over the May Day weekend.
The team's fundraising efforts, however, have not all gone to plan. After manager Allan Brown took some players for a
fundraising day at Ellesmere Port's giant Asda store, he found an unwelcome surprise waiting for him when he returned to the car park.
He explained: 'Things were hectic and I had forgotten to buy a parking ticket. I was in Asda all day fundraising and when I came out there was a £30 penalty ticket, but I was assured by the parking attendant that as I was fundraising the council would almost certainly refund the charge.
'After three appeal letters they have still refused, despite the fact I asked not for the money to be refunded to me, but to the club travel fund.'
But Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council have told the Pioneer that they could not refund the money for that very reason - as the terms of their enforcement contract do not allow it.
Brown added: 'We are not sponsored at all, we raise all the money we need. We started this club because when kids get to U11, teams can only have 18-man squads so armies of kids are discarded.
'I saw this and decided get some people together and start a club where they could come and play in the junior league but not be pressured by chasing results.'
Rossway went on a Sports Tours event last year and had a memorable time.
'It was brilliant,' said Allan. 'It was fun and we won the fair play award.
'It is a treat for them at the end of the season and we do this rather than compete in local close-season tournaments because it makes it a memorable event for them.'
Rossway U12s are still looking for help to make the trip a reality. There will be a fundraising race night on Saturday, March 24 at the Electricity Sports and Social Club, Capenhurst, and for £30 you can sponsor a race.
