GIGGS was on the scoresheet as FC United of Manchester brushed aside Nantwich in Saturday's cup clash.

More than 1,200 people packed into Jackson Avenue for the League Challenge Cup second-round fixture, but those in green and white left disappointed.

Always the underdogs against the side formed by Manchester United fans disgruntled with the American takeover of Old Trafford, they had the better of a goalless first half.

But moneybags United clicked up a gear in the second, and eventually cruised to a comfortable victory sparked by a strike from Rhodri Giggs - brother of Red Devils legend Ryan.

Boss Steve Davis said: 'I can't fault the lads because they continued to battle. It was always going to be a difficult tie for us against such a good side because we are still badly affected by injuries.

'We were the better of the two sides in the first half. We made them look very ordinary and had we put a couple of chances away it could have been a different out-come. But our energy levels dropped in the second half, allowing them to run us ragged at times.'

Davis elected not to risk midfielders Stuart Scheuber and Paul Donnelly ahead of Saturday's FA Vase opener against Shildon, at Jackson Avenue (3pm).

Hungarian Gyorgy Kiss made his home debut in midfield as the Dabbers lined up in a 4-3-3 formation. They were out of the blocks early and Andy Bott and Matt Blake threatened within the first five minutes.

Michalis Chailis forced a magnificent save from the United keeper, while Rob Hackney did well to deny Stuart Rudd at the other end, on 20 minutes.

Nantwich penalty appeals were waved away when the Cypriot went down in the box under a heavy challenge from United's Dave Chadwick as the first half drew to a close.

The hosts were dealt a hammer blow when United went ahead on 47 minutes. The pace of Giggs proved too much for the home defence and he unleashed a fearsome drive past Hackney.

Rudd added a second on 55 minutes when he ran on to a Giggs pass unchallenged to score from 15 yards.

United keeper Sam Ashton saved at the feet of Bott as the former Leek Town man tried to get one back, and he glanced a cross from sub Matt Platt just wide on 66 minutes.

Kiss thought he had reduced the arrears with an accurate header from 10 yards until the flying Ashton intervened, before the Dabbers were hit by a sucker punch.

Nantwich failed to clear an 81st minute corner and United skipper Chadwick rammed home the loose ball from close range.

Nantwich face a stern test as they begin their defence of the Vase. Visitors Shildon, from County Durham, have lost just two league games this season, lie second in the Northern League Division One, and have games in hand on leaders Billingham Town.
