STALWART John Brown is stepping up for charity after standing down from football for the first time in 22 years.

The 39-year-old Alsager Town coach is taking a break from the beautiful game after learning he needs a serious knee operation after years of wear and tear.

After years of dedication to the game, playing midfield for the likes of Witton Albion, Stalybridge Celtic, Leek Town, Newcastle Town and the Bullets, his mind and body need a rest.

He played a major part behind the scenes in Town's glorious promotion from the North West Counties League last season, and team manager Greg Clowes immediately insisted that next Wednesday's (12th) pre-season friendly with Football League new boys Accrington Stanley would be a benefit match for John.

But the IT teacher, who worked at Brine Leas and St Thomas More before his current role at St Nicholas High School, Hartford, has insisted proceeds go towards children charity Donna Louise Trust.

John has arranged for the match, at the Town Ground (7.45pm) to be held in tribute to former Alsager School pupil Simon Pettinger, 16, who recently lost his battle with cancer.

He said: 'I would prefer the money to go to charity and of course the Donna Louise Trust is a great cause. But I would also be delighted if the game was in memory of Simon.

'There has been a real community effort involving schools, pubs and businesses to sell the 5,000 raffle tickets which will also raise funds, and I want as many people to get down for the match.'

He added: 'I've decided to take a break from football for a while because I have a wife and two kids, and it takes up so much of my time.

'I also need an operation on my knee, which will include my leg being broken and realigned, and later I'll need a joint replacement. I'm not sure if or when I'll get back in the game, but I'm sure I'll want at least 12 months away.

'I'd like to thank Greg, Dorian and the players for their support and some wonderful times. I'm confident they can make an impact in the UniBond next season.'

John was forced to quit playing three years ago and was brought in to help Clowes and his assistant Dorian Garner with coaching.

The trio masterminded a superb success last term, piloting the Bullets to third place in Division One and earning promotion to the UniBond Division One.

Simon's parents Mandy and Michael will be presented with a silver salver before the game, while his teenage brothers Chris and Adam will kick-off the match. His sister Chloe will be mascot, along with John's daughters Katie and Mollie.

A range of super prizes are on offer in the raffle, including signed football shirts from Liverpool and Arsenal, match tickets for Port Vale and Stoke City games, and meal vouchers for restaurants.
