MORE than 1,000 junior footballers descended on Rivacre Park over the weekend for Vauxhall Motors' annual Festival of Football.

The two-day competition attracted 160 teams from across the North West and North Wales and raised upwards of £1,300 for the charity Miles of Smiles, which takes parties of sick and disabled youngsters on trips to Disneyland Paris.

Players and supporters were treated to glorious weather on both days and the quality of football on show was as high as ever.

Vauxhall teams won two of the nine age groups, their under 12s team beating Ellesmere Port 1-0 in the final while their U13s triumphed by the same score against Eastham Rangers.

Teams from the host club were also beaten finalists in four other age groups.

They lost 2-0 to Barlows at U8s level, were defeated on penalties by Frodsham Town in the U10s section, lost 1-0 to Castrol Athletic in the U14s and were beaten on spot-kicks by Ellesmere Port U7s.

It was the second tournament win in the space of a fortnight for Ellesmere Port's U7 hotshots, who triumphed at Eastham at the start of the month.

Mossley Hill A defeated their B team 2-1 in the final of the U9s competition, Stork triumphed 1-0 against Pensinsula Rangers in the U11s and Glenavon defeated Ashville by the same scoreline in the U15s final.
