FORMER Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has backed the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as the club’s new boss.

The Spain midfielder, who enjoyed five years at Anfield before joining Real Madrid in 2009, still follows the Reds closely.

“I think that everyone is really optimistic about the new manager,” he said.

“As far as I knew, he was one of the ones who was going to be approached. As a Liverpool fan it gives me hope for the future.”
