CHESTER City will hold further talks with Mark Wright next week over a possible return to the Deva.

The former England and Liverpool defender has shown an interest in investing in the club and could also take up a role as director of football.

Negotiations are at an extremely early stage but the possible return of Wright – who has had two previous spells as manager – is likely to divide opinion among the fans.

Blues owner Stephen Vaughan said: “We’ll sit down and have a chat next week. Mark has made it known he wants to come in as a director of football and he’d also like to invest.

“He fits the bill in terms of what we’re looking for from a director of football but there is a lot to be discussed.”

Blues boss Simon Davies, who would be expected to work under Wright should he return, yesterday said he had no objections to a more experienced man coming in.

“The owner’s spoken to me about it and said there’s a possibility he’ll look into it and he’ll keep me up to date with the situation,” said Davies, who is in his first senior managerial position having been promoted from youth team boss last season.

“Obviously, I know Wrighty from when he was first here. We worked closely on and I’ve got a good relationship with him so it wouldn’t be anything that I would find a problem with.”

Blues skipper Paul Linwood, who was signed by Wright during his second spell as manager two years ago, added: “Mark’s an experienced fellow and I’m sure if he came in he’d do a good job,.

“He’s a strong character. He’s played in World Cups, he’s played for Liverpool. He knows football.

“Being the defender he was, anything he has to say you’ve really got to take note of.”

Wright led the Blues to the Conference title in 2004 but infamously quit the day before their first game back in the Football League following a fall-out with Vaughan.

He made a surprise return to the hotseat early in 2006, leading City away from the clutches of relegation before parting company with the club just over a year later.

Wright’s expertise in creating well-drilled, defensively sound teams may be exactly what struggling Chester need right now – but it is a style which has not always endeared him to the fans.

The 45-year-old is currently on holiday and is not expected back in time to attend tomorrow’s home clash with Barnet.
