West Cheshire League club Upton AA will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a game against Chester FC on Tuesday, July 15.

Founded in 1962, the club played its first competitive match two years later in the Chester and District Football League.

Upton hosted Manchester United academy each pre-season for many years before the Premier League club ended the tradition.

Chairman Peter Upton approached Steve Burr about a match between the clubs to celebrate the landmark and is hoping the game at The Cheshire County Sports Club will attract a big crowd.

Peter said: “The Manchester United game used to bring in a fair bit and it’s difficult running an amateur club so we were disappointed when it ended.

“I got in touch with Steve Burr about a game for our anniversary and he was only too happy to oblige.

“We are hoping to get a decent crowd down and it should be a great occasion.”

Peter has been involved with the club since 1982 but stalwarts Reggie Bedford and Mike Denham have been there since the beginning.

Upton’s first team has started pre-season training under manager Todd Reid and he hopes to include some new faces in his squad for the game, which kicks off at 7.30pm with admission costing £2.

Upton AA are seeking a major sponsor for 2014-15 and anyone interested can call Peter on 07818 068088.
