LIVERPOOL face an anxious wait to discover the extent of Steven Gerrard’s injury setback amid fears he could be out for the rest of the season.

Gerrard’s hopes of returning to action against West Brom three weeks after undergoing groin surgery were dashed after he pulled up in training on Friday.

Gerrard felt “a sharp pain” in his groin and boss Kenny Dalglish doesn’t know how much longer he will be without the Reds’ captain.

Dalglish’s problems mounted during the 2-1 defeat at The Hawthorns as both Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger limped off.

Agger’s season could be over after he damaged a tendon in his knee, while Johnson is likely to be out for up to a month with a hamstring injury.

“I don’t know when Steven will be back,” Dalglish said.

“I’ve got to look at what the damage is, the same with Glen Johnson and Daniel. Towards the end of the week we will be in a better position to tell you a) what the injuries exactly are and b) how long they will be out.

“Steven was training when he tried to turn with the ball and felt a sharp pain.

“It’s the same injury but not the same thing.

“To lose three players in April would be a blow for anybody. It’s disappointing for Steven because he has missed a few games and was training really well and looking forward to being back in among the lads.”

With Gerrard’s absence coinciding with the return to fitness of Andy Carroll, Dalglish has still yet to have the luxury of fielding his strongest starting XI.

Dalglish added: “They have never all been fit at the same time.

“Everybody wants to get their strongest team on the pitch but injuries are part and parcel of the game and you just have to get on with it.”
