STEVE Carragher has hailed the winning mentality which has earned a place in North West Counties Division One at the first attempt.

The Runcorn Linnets manager has put the dark days in charge of Runcorn FC Halton behind him to take the new boys up with a game to spare.

He said: 'The commitment and effort of the players all season has been great and the fans have been superb.

'Last year, even when I first took over, it was a case of trying to survive but from the word go this year we have had the full backing of everyone and it is a totally different atmosphere. '

'It is optimism now as opposed to doom and gloom.

'There is now a winning mentality - and that comes from everybody involved with the club.'

Chairman Derek Greenwood said: 'Promotion is what we deserve. It has been one big com bined effort.

'We have got to thank Steve for staying with us and believing in us.'

Skipper Paul Scott said: 'Last year (with Runcorn FC Halton), the lads weren't getting paid and the team spirit was a bit low.

'But this season everything has been spot-on and the fans are right behind us.

'I think we are well capable, with the squad we have, of competing in Division One.'

Runcorn could go to Chadderton for their last match still with a chance of the title.

But Winsford, who won 4-0 at Holker on Tuesday, would have to lose at New Mills tonight and again at home to Darwen on Saturday, when Linnets would have to win.
