BLUES notched their first points of the season with a fine win in the rural surroundings of Eccleshall on Wednesday.

Their hosts, the Midlands League champions, have been widely tipped to do well but they had to play second fiddle to a Winsford team that was totally revitalised by the return of Mark Quinn in midfield.

Winsford were probably lucky to go in scoreless at half-time as the home side missed a succession of chances.

But once Chris Melia had scored in the 62nd minute, they were in command.

Melia had just two chances and then Steve Rowland's through ball put him clear and his feet were whipped from under him. He dusted himself down to score from the penalty spot.

Eccleshall equalised on 66 minutes through Carl Bailey, but Stuart Wellstead came on after 73 minutes and he immediately caused the home defence all sorts of problems with his speed and control, but he scored the winner with his head rising high to meet a Neil Harrison free-kick with 10 minutes remaining.

WINSFORD: Tucker, Heywood (Wellstead 73), Sproats, Melia, Wilkinson, Rowland (Harrison 67), Chambers, Turner, Williams, Webber (Hutchinson 53), Quinn.
