IT'S been a bad week for Coors Mid-Cheshire League club Barnton who lost their grip on the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup as well as going out of the Mid-Cheshire FA Senior Cup.
As Amateur Cup holders, they were expected to beat Christleton in their third round tie at the Town Field, but the impressive West Cheshire League men hit them with early goals from ex-Chester City striker Wes Kilgannon and his brother Sean and they went out 2-0.
The Villagers' Mid-Cheshire FA Senior Cup defeat came in a qualifying round thriller under floodlights against Winsford United at Barton Stadium. Stuart Wellstead put Wins-ford ahead and Barnton levelled through Phil Jones to earn extra-time which was goalless. The North West Counties League side went on to win 4-2 on penalties, the winning spot-kick being netted by former Barnton player Will Hurley.
First Division leaders Middlewich Town returned to form with a 2-0 home win against Pilkington and, now have a 10-point advantage over second-placed Cros-fields, with Barnton third a further point behind, but with six games in hand.
In First Division Cup second round ties, Bollington, Crosfields and Trafford reserves all went through to the quarter-finals.
