THE death has occurred at the age of 74 of Runcorn-born Cheshire Football Association President Alan Burbidge.
Alan was instrumental in the formation of the Runcorn FA in 1975 and went on to become assistant secretary of Cheshire FA. In 1979, he was appointed President of the county association. After becoming Cheshire's delegate on the FA council, his administrative abilities were recognised by promotion and at the time of his death he was chairman of the FA's National League Systems Committee, as well as being vice-chairman of the FA Challenge Cup committee.
He had an operation for cancer two years ago and while enjoying a period of remission, never fully recovered and was ill at the time of the realisation of his greatest ambition last month when he helped FA chairman John Thompson open the Cheshire FA's £600,000 HQ building at Northwich.
Alan, who lived at Delamere Park, leaves a wife and two daughters.
