CHESTER'S eagerly-anticipated Carling Cup tie with Leeds United will evoke plenty of memories for supporters who watched the club during the 1970s and 80s.

Fortune favoured the Blues in Wednesday's first-round draw when they were handed a trip to Elland Road on Tuesday, August 22.

Chester's most famous previous meeting with Leeds came at Sealand Road in November 1974 when the Yorkshire giants - then reigning Division One champions - were beaten 3-0.

The sides last met in a two-legged League Cup second round tie in October 1983.

Although Chester won the first leg at Elland Road 1-0 thanks to an Andy Elliott goal, they lost the second 4-1 in front of 8,044 fans at Sealand Road.

The Blues are entitled to 45% of the net gate receipts for this year's rematch and are sure to take a good away following across the Pennines.

But although last year's average attendance at Elland Road was around the 22,000 mark, only 14,970 watched United's first-round Carling Cup tie against Oldham Athletic last August.
