CREWE Ladies moved a step closer to their league and cup double dream with a win over Wirral LFC in the Cheshire County Cup.

Goals in each half from winger Paula Lambert and centre back Beth Clark were enough to set up a final showdown with Tranmere Rovers.

Crewe were frustrated until Lambert sprung the offside trap and curled her shot past the keeper. Second-half substitute Gemma Edwards had her individual effort disallowed for handball, before Clark thudded a header against the post but reacted to squeeze home her first goal for the club.

Wirral hit the bar as they mounted a fightback, but could not get on the scoresheet. Crewe's joy at the final whistle was doubled when news that league rivals Leafield Athletic had dropped points in Midland Combination. Leafield lead Crewe by three points but the South Cheshire outfit have three games in hand.
