CHESTER City are in talks with former Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard.

The veteran shot-stopper has been identified by Mark Wright as the man to end his search for an experienced goalkeeper and provide cover for youngster John Danby.

The move for the 33-year-old follows weeks of speculation in which City have been linked with a host of keepers including Doncaster Rovers' Andy Warrington and an unnamed player who featured at the World Cup in Germany.

City chairman Stephen Vaughan said: 'We have arranged to meet Paul and his agent to discuss a deal. We are aware that there are other clubs interested, but we will explore if there is any common ground between us.'

Gerrard is available on a free transfer and is searching for a club after being released by Nottingham Forest at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the Blues have been rocked by the news that new signing Glenn Cronin could face three months on the sidelines.

The former Exeter City midfielder, who completed the formalities of his move to the Saunders Honda Stadium last week, suffered a broken metatarsal during training.

The injury is a further blow for City boss Mark Wright who has already seen defender Phil Bolland ruled out for up to two months with a dislocated shoulder.

* City travel to Northwich Victoria tomorrow for their third pre-season fixture in five days.

The match at the Victoria Stadium will kick off at 3pm.
