Any team news?

Theo Vassell will make his first appearance in a blue and white shirt having completed his six-month loan switch from Walsall on Monday.

Following his side's 4-0 win at Sandbach United on Saturday, Jon McCarthy suggested he would continue to mix up his team and treat the game as an opportunity to explore his entire squad.

However, there is a chance he will want to start having a closer look at several combinations ahead of the new season. Evan Horwood and Johnny Hunt linked up well on the left while McCarthy might also want to partner James Alabi and Kane Richards together against tough oppositon.

Tonight could be a final chance to impress for those trialists still training with the squad including the likes of Rakim Newton and Wade Joyce.

What has Jon McCarthy had to say about it?

"We become Sandbach on Wednesday and that's good," said McCarthy after the Blues eased to victory over the North West Counties League new boys at the weekend.

"This was a fitness thing with the greatest respect to Sandbach, who have been great with their hospitality and the way they have looked after us.

"But at home against Wigan it's that mentality where we're going up against some of the bigger teams and I want us to be able to compete and to contain them and to see if we can create a few chances."

Any players to watch out for?

Last season's star man was Will Grigg, who scored 28 goals in 42 games. The forward was part of the Northern Ireland squad for Euro 2016 and while he didn't feature in the tournament, Grigg was the name of most supporters lips thanks to the chant Will Grigg's On Fire, adapted from the Gala's Freed from Desire.

Ryan Taylor could be involved tonight having returned to the club on trial. The former Newcastle United attacking full-back, who started his career at Tranmere Rovers, has struggled with injuries but is hoping to earn himself a deal with the Latics after leaving Hull City.

What happened the last time the two sides met?

It's been almost 20 years since Chester faced Wigan in a competitive game. On that occasion Dave Flitcroft's goal earned the Blues a 1-1 draw against the Latics, who ended the season as League Two champions.

The most recent meeting between the clubs was a pre-season encounter in August 2010 when Barrow, filling in for then Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, brought a youthful side to take on Neil Young's newly-assembled team.

Chester claimed a one-sided 4-0 victory over the Premier League youngsters, whose squad included current Blues defender Ryan Astles, with goals from Michael Wilde, Oliver Ryan, Rob Hopley and captain George Horan in front of 1,638 fans.
