Chester FC have announced the home game with Tranmere Rovers has been moved to Sunday, February 28.

The National League clash, which will now kick-off at 12 noon and be an all-ticket match, had been scheduled to take place the day before at 3pm.

Although no reason has been given for the switch, The Chronicle understands the decision follows advice from Cheshire Police.

Wrexham visit Macclesfield on the original date and, given the number of fans that can be expected to travel via rail to that game and the likelihood Tranmere supporters will be using the train too, the potential for trouble could have been a consideration.

Chester and Tranmere met in a competitive game for the first time in 24 years in September at Prenton Park.

Rovers recorded a comfortable 2-0 win in front of 7,433 fans, including 1,526 from Chester, thanks to first-half goals from Liam Hogan and James Norwood.

Following the game, Merseyside Police said there had been 'several small outbreaks of disorder' outside the ground.

A small number of people were ejected from the game, including one man who encroached onto the pitch.

Last week two Wallasey men were banned from attending football matches after admitting racist chanting during that match.

Joshua Harrison, 23, and Thomas Brooks, 22, repeatedly tried to start ‘despicable’ songs during the match on September 12.

The men pleaded guilty to racist chanting and were given football banning orders at South Sefton Magistrates Court on November 24.

The Blues confirmed the new date for the return fixture on Wednesday morning.

"Chester FC and Tranmere Rovers can confirm that the game at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium between the two sides has been moved to Sunday, February 28 with kick-off at midday," read a statement on the club's website.

"The National League fixture will be an all ticket affair, although season ticket holders will not be affected by this."
