Chester FC manager Steve Burr will step up his attempts to improve his squad this week but admits it has been a frustrating transfer window to date.

The Blues have managed to bring in defender Ryan Astles from Northwich Victoria, striker Jason Gilchrist on loan from Burnley and goalkeeper Tony Thompson .

But with Danny Hattersley returning to FC Halifax Town, the sale of George Thompson to FC United of Manchester, Kane Richards out on loan to Gainsborough Trinity and Dylan Forth being released, the squad requires strengthening.

Burr's focus is on adding quality in the final third and he has identified several targets but so far none have come to fruition.

Following the goalless draw with Southport on Saturday , the ex-Kidderminster Harriers boss revealed he had missed out on a forward who had worked under him before.

Although he did not name the player, Jamille Matt, now back at Fleetwood Town after an unsuccessful loan spell at Stevenage, would fit the description having thrived under Burr at Aggborough.

Burr said: "We've been hard at it for a week with Danny Hattersley going back and the sale of George Thomson so we'll be looking at it this week but at the minute it's just a bit frustrating really.

"I don't just want to bring players in for the sake of it. We've got young Jason in from Burnley as a striker but we do need another striker and hasn't necessarily got to be a big man as far as I'm concerned.

"We've played well this season with the three that started on Saturday and it's been predominantly those three that have got us the better results.

"You're always looking to improve and there was a long shot this week I was hoping we could get somebody I'd worked with before but it's probably going to be just out of our reach."
