Chester FC have swooped to sign Wade Joyce and James Akintunde.

The duo have been on trial at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium during pre-season and have impressed Blues boss Jon McCarthy enough to be handed permanent deals for the new season.

Midfielder Joyce, 22, has taken in spells at clubs including St Johnstone, Barnsley and Stockport County during his career and is the son of Manchester United reserve team boss and Hull City legend Warren Joyce.

Joyce has featured in the bulk of Chester's pre-season games and is set to provide competition for the central midfield berth.

Striker Akintunde has earned a deal having impressed for the Blues in his last two outings in pre-season.

The 20-year-old former Cambridge United man bagged a first-half hat-trick in the 5-3 win over Marine last weekend and was a constant threat going forward during Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Nantwich Town.

Akintunde has a prolific goalscoring record in the lower reaches of non-league football following impressive loan spells with the likes of AFC Sudbury and Histon during his time with the U's.

Both players are set to play a part in Saturday's home friendly with Burton Albion (3pm) and will be part of McCarthy's first team plans for the National League season opener at Gateshead on August 6.

The Chronicle understands that one more face could be heading into the club before the start of the new season, with a loan deal for a Football League striker a possibility, although no deal has yet been concluded.
