CHESTER FC boss Neil Young and assistant Gary Jones did their bit for a Chronicle-backed charity last Thursday.

The pair were guests at a sportsmen’s bash in aid of Miles of Smiles, which raises money to send sick, disabled and under-privileged children on the trip of a lifetime.

Sky Sports personality Chris Kamara headlined the evening’s entertainment at Chester’s Slow Boat restaurant, regaling the audience with tales from his football and television careers.

The Chester management duo, who signed autographs and posed for pictures with Chester fans, were guests of Shane Pinnington from radio station Dee 106.3. A profit of £2,500 was made on the night and the money will go towards the Miles of Smiles appeal fund for 2010-11.

The following evening, Chester FC chairman Chris Pilsbury was guest speaker at a Chester Caledonian Association (CCA) dinner at Willington Hall Hotel in Tarporley.

The CCA is for people who live in the Chester area and are of Scottish descent or enjoy a deep interest in Scotland and its culture.

Mr Pilsbury described the demise of the old club and how the energy and commitment of those who loved it was decisive in its rebirth.

He was invited along by CCA chairman Mike Martin, an ‘exiled’ Partick Thistle supporter now living in Chester.

Mr Martin, who watches the Blues regularly and is a member of City Fans United, said: “This is an inspiring story and demonstrates how much can be achieved if the will exists. My only regret is that Chester Thistle was not chosen as the club’s new name.”
