TWO goals in his first two games made loan star Matty McGinn a firm fans’ favourite – and the good news for Blues supporters is the feeling is mutual.

The 28-year-old could not have asked to make a better start to his Chester FC career as he scored in the home wins over FC United of Manchester and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Although McGinn was brought down to earth at Nantwich Town on Monday, the left-back is loving life at the Exacta Stadium and is open to the possibility of signing a permanent deal once his one-month loan from Southport runs out.

“It’s a great club and after this month we’ll see what happens,” said McGinn, who made 38 appearances for the Blue Square Premier outfit last season but at present is out of favour with Sandgrounders boss Liam Watson.

“Neil Young’s got to go to my manager at Southport and if they sort something out, they sort something out.

“But I’m loving it here and the lads are fantastic. I’ve played with a few of them at Southport and that’s always a bonus.

“I had no concerns about dropping down a couple of divisions as all I want to do is play football and this club is the best around at the level they’re at. That’s why I jumped at the chance when Neil asked me to come here.”

McGinn’s eagerness to impress was immediately apparent in his debut against FC United last Wednesday. In front of 3,219 supporters, he showed nerves of steel to slot in the 17th-minute penalty which sent Young’s men on their way to a 2-1 win.

“I didn’t expect to take a penalty in my first game, but no-one else ran over and, as I’ve got a decent record, I thought I’d take it,” said McGinn.

“The atmosphere on the night was unbelievable. Getting a crowd of more than 3,000 people on a Wednesday night proves this is a big club.”

McGinn’s ability from set-pieces is a big part of his game, with his goal against Stocksbridge on Saturday demonstrating perfectly the threat he poses.

Given that he also offers sound distribution out of defence and a Rory Delap-style long throw, no wonder Chester manager Young is keen to keep hold of the loanee.

“I don’t know where the long throw has come from,” said McGinn. “It’s not a bad weapon – it’s just my shoulder kills me after every game and it makes me knackered running over to take them!”

Chester FC have joined forces with Chester City Ladies. The women’s team, which has been in existence for 19 years, will from next season be known as Chester Ladies FC.

Chester FC Youth recorded their first victory of the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division season as they beat Curzon Ashton 4-0 at the Exacta Stadium on Sunday. Jack Roberts (2), Connor Kendrick and Jordan Grace got the goals.
