Kane Richards believes the last-gasp equaliser in the 3-3 draw at Guiseley on Monday shows that the Blues have the stomach for a fight.

Richards emerged from the bench at Nethermoor and scored with his first touch to level the scores at 2-2 before Tom Shaw salvaged a point for Steve Burr's side in West Yorkshire after Emile Sinclair looked to have bagged the points for the Lions on 89 minutes.

But winger Richards, 21, believes that while the Blues were disappointed with having not secured maximum points in their bid for National League safety, the manner of the way they earned a share of the spoils shows the character of the side.

"We were disappointed that we got it back to 2-2 and made it difficult for ourselves but everyone is still looking at it like it shows a lot of fight," said Richards, who was brought back into the fold having been on the fringes of the first-team squad in recent weeks.

"We could have come away with nothing at the end of the day so to get it back to 3-3 I think we've done well.

"At the end of the day we've come away with a good point that could be a vital point at the end.

"The character is there and the fight is there, we just need to look to stop the goals going in and someone is going to be on the end of a hiding for us.

"All the boys are raring to go. Everybody wants to get out of the situation we're in and keep pushing on."

Richards, who had a spell out on loan with Gainsborough Trinity earlier this season, was pleased to make his mark in his brief cameo appearance, sidefooting home from close range to bring Chester level on 83 minutes despite having been on the pitch less than 60 seconds.

"I was my first or second touch and I just looked to roll it on target and, luckily, it has gone in," he added.

"It is always frustrating when you're not playing anyway, everybody wants to play. You just have to keep going, keep plugging along and keep doing what you're doing.

"Sometimes you get your chance and luckily I got mine and took it and helped us get the point. Hopefully I can do it more often."
