James Alabi fancies his new Chester FC team-mates to make FA Trophy progress and give themselves a platform to climb the National League table.

Alabi, who signed last week on a deal for the rest of the season, won't be involved against FC Halifax Town having appeared in the competition while on loan to Grimsby Town.

But from what he's seen in training, the cup-tied forward reckons there's no reason the Blues cannot be in the draw for the quarter-finals.

Alabi said: "It's a game for us to win and we've beat them twice already so I don't see why we shouldn't beat them again.

"If we get a win then that's going to motivate us to do well and do better in the league so we'll focus on Saturday's game get a win and then push on from there.

"I think that's all we need. I can see we've got the quality in the team and the standard in this league isn't much different from League Two because I've played at both levels.

"It would be good for us to get a win and then we can kick on."

London-born Alabi was approached about a move to Chester in the summer after leaving Premier League club Stoke City.

He attracted significant interest from the Football League however and eventually opted to sign for Championship side Ipswich Town.

Alabi scored on his sole senior appearance for the Tractor Boys against Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup but found first-team opportunities limited.

He was loaned to Grimsby, netting twice in five games, but after returning to Portman Road came to an agreement to terminate his contract and move on in search of regular football.

Alabi believes he will get that at Chester and is confident the fans will see the best of him in the coming weeks as he gets more minutes under his belt.

"It's a great chance for me to get playing some games, get my head down and prove myself that I can do well in senior football," said Alabi.

"The gaffer's been good to me. He's said I should carry on working hard and be free because this is my chance to play and do well.

"It will take one or two games for the lads to get me know me and for me to get my fitness levels up.

"I've not got any targets but I just want to get as many goals as I can."
