Experienced full back Gareth Roberts has penned a 12-month deal with Chester FC.

Roberts, who has amassed more than 500 games in the Football League, finished last season with League One club Notts County.

He was close to joining the Blues in January and trained with the club before opting to move to Meadow Lane.

Steve Burr invited Roberts back on a pre-season trial and the manager was impressed enough to make the 36-year-old his 11th summer signing.

Wrexham-born Roberts, who won nine caps for Wales, will bring valuable experience to a squad that will be one of the youngest in the Conference Premier.

Burr said: "Gareth has impressed me in training this week and wants to come and play for the club.

"He is vastly experienced and above all is very fit which will be an asset to us this season.

"He will be able to help develop some of the younger lads we have here and I’m delighted to have him on board."

Roberts started his career with Premier League club Liverpool but moved to Greek side Panionios without making the first team.

He made 15 appearances in Greece before joining Tranmere Rovers on loan in August 1999, making the move permanent three months later.

Roberts spent seven seasons at Prenton Park, making more than 330 senior appearances and helping the club reach the Football League Cup final in 2000.

He moved to Doncaster Rovers in 2006 and won the Football League Trophy and promotion to the Championship in a 165-game spell in South Yorkshire.

Roberts switched to Derby County in 2010 and spent three seasons at Pride Park, making 104 appearances before being released last summer.

He started the 2013-14 season with League Two side Bury but was released after 13 games, then joining Notts County where he made six appearances.

Roberts was one a number of trialists who started training with the Blues last week with Burr planning to take a closer look when his side travel to Marine on Saturday (3pm) for their first pre-season game.
