Former Everton and Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers is training with Chester FC with a view to joining the club.

Blues' boss Steve Burr has given the 33-year-old an opportunity to get his career back on track having led a nomadic existence over the past few seasons.

Ex-England international Jeffers burst onto the scene with boyhood club Everton in 1997, making his debut aged 16 and going on to score 20 goals in 60 games.

His form for the Toffees earned him an £8 million move to Arsenal in 2001 but injuries and a lack of opportunities hindered his progress.

Jeffers, who scored in his sole England appearance, rejoined Everton on loan in 2003 but struggled for form and joined Charlton for £2.6 million in summer 2004.

His career since has seen him slide down the leagues and the Liverpool-born frontman has not featured in a competitive game this season.

But he is keen to keep playing and trained with the Blues last week with Burr confirming he would be inviting Jeffers back down this week.

"I think he would be a really good addition to us but obviously the lad wants to come in and be right," said Burr.

"I approached him about coming to Chester and we will have a look at him,  but we have also got one or two other irons in the fire and hopefully we can bring in one or two players before Saturday.

“Franny doesn’t want to come into the squad and let himself down. He wants to be right."

Jeffers has scored 52 goals in 279 senior appearances and had spells with Rangers, Blackburn Rovers, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday after leaving Charlton.

He then moved overseas, joining Newcastle United Jets in Australia before returning to the UK with Motherwell but then heading Down Under and rejoining the Jets

Jeffers linked up with Maltese club Floriana in 2012 - then under the control of ex-Chester City owner Stephen Vaughan - but lasted only two games, later claiming he had not been paid.

He had a short spell with League Two side Accrington Stanley last season and spent time on trial with Bury in November before being linked with a move to Singaporean S-League side Brunei DPMM.
