An aggrieved Steve Burr believes match-changing decisions went against Chester FC during the 1-0 reverse at Eastleigh.

Ross Hannah looked to have given the visitors the lead on seven minutes when he fired a Ryan Higgins cross into the roof of the net from close range but a tight offside call denied the Blues.

Eastleigh dominated the game for the most part and created a host of chances but keeper Tony Thompson frustrated them with a string of fine saves, however he could not keep out a controversial Matt Tubs penalty with 20 minutes to go.

Referee David Rock ruled Ryan Astles had fouled Tubbs despite contact minimal and the experienced striker converted from the spot for his first goal for the Spitfires.

Chester's valiant defensive efforts, including two goal-line clearances from Johnny Hunt, kept them in the contest until the final whistle and substitute Tom Shaw had a chance to rescue a point late on but his shot flew inches over the bar.

"It always going to be a tough game for us but there were two things in the game where we felt we'd been hard done by," said Burr afterwards.

"That was the disallowed goal in the first-half because we felt Ryan Higgins cut the ball back to Ross Hannah and he's run onto it. We were very disappointed by the decision and the lads are adamant the penalty that was given in the second-half was harsh to say the least.

Recap: Look back at how the action unfolded with The Chronicle's match blog

"I said to the lads that we couldn't have done anymore. Defending is a big part of the game as well and we stood up to the challenge and I thought we looked really solid and a penalty is the difference between three points or not so we're disappointed but at the same time I couldn't have asked anymore from the lads.

"We didn't create a lot in the second-half to be fair but I thought we started the game really bright but maybe with what's happened this week you could see there were tired legs with the long trip down.

"We set off at 7am in the morning and it's not excuses but you could see there were one or two tired bodies out there but I'm proud of the lads and the fact they worked their socks off and defensively where we called upon we put our bodies on the line and blocked things.

"Towards the end Tom Shaw had a good chance to score but he just couldn't keep it down and maybe we just felt we should have deserved something out of it."
