Chester FC have secured a new 50-year lease on the Swansway Chester Stadium with Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC).

City Fans United, the supporters' organisation which owns the club, was given a five-year lease on the Bumpers Lane ground in 2010, which was close to expiring.

Terms on the long-term arrangement were agreed last June and, following extensive negotiations with the council, legal matters pertaining to the lease have now been completed.

The announcement comes just 24 hours after manager Steve Burr signed an extended contract, which will run until the end of the 2016-17 season.

A formal handover of the lease is expected to take place on the pitch during the home game with Woking on Saturday (3pm).

Club chairman Grenville Millington said: "What a fantastic two days this has been for our club and today marks a very important milestone in our development.

"Thanks must go to our past chairman Tony Durkin who led for us on this important project for many, many months. Tony was ably advised and assisted by Steve Harvey and CFU member Paul Ivison.

"Our vice-chair Jim Keegan saw the project through to conclusion after Tony stood down from his board role. We can now build for the future with confidence."

The length of the new lease will allow the club greater access to grant funding to undertake planned improvements to the stadium.

Club directors have acknowledged the work of solicitors Hillyer McKeown in bringing the negotiations to a conclusion, and expressed thanks to CWaC and council staff for assisting them throughout the process.

Council leader Mike Jones, a lifelong supporter of the club, said: "I am pleased that the council is able to support the club with a 50-year lease to enable the club to press ahead with developing the facilities for the benefit of their community work they are doing and to continue to improve the football team.

"Hopefully they will move up to the next division in the next few years.

"This also shows the confidence we have in the club after a successful five years getting into the Conference league. For a fan run club it is just brilliant."
