Steve Burr has challenged his team to earn the right to remain in non-league’s top flight over the final four games.

Aldershot Town and Hereford United made up ground with wins in midweek as the relegation battle intensified.

Chester are two points and two places above the bottom four with a trip to third-placed Grimsby Town up next on Saturday (3.07pm).

Burr does not believe in worrying about results elsewhere and remains confident his side can beat the drop.

He said: “We have got four cup finals with something to play for and that is our right to stay in the Conference Premier.

“I am always trying to be optimistic and I will always be as positive as I can about things.

“We’ve got four games to go and I felt before last weekend we needed three wins and I think another two will be enough for us.”

Since Burr took charge in January, the Blues have picked up seven wins and three draws from 17 league games.

Over the course of the season, that form would see them positioned in mid-table.

What has frustrated the manager is the team’s habit of following up a good performance with a dreadful one.

But that inconsistency means Burr believes his side can upset the odds against the Mariners this weekend.

He said: “In football you will get situations like this and nobody is going to give us much of a chance. But that’s the unpredictable thing about this league and if we are right on the day then we are more than capable of going there and getting a result.

“We know how difficult it will be but this side is capable of putting in a performance that can match Grimsby.”

On-loan defender Matty Brown will miss the trip to Blundell Park after being sent off for throwing the ball in the 3-2 win over Hyde last weekend.

Burr said: “Matty has apologised and he realises how silly he was. I know things like that happen in football but going down to 10 men didn’t help us.

“We were cruising and then all of a sudden we pressed the self destruct button.

“That made for a nervous end to a game that should have been out of sight.”

Luke Ashworth, Paul Linwood and captain George Horan, now back in training after an ankle operation, are in contention to replace Brown.

Burr could hand ex-Premier League defender Andy Griffin his first start after an impressive cameo against Hyde.

“Andy Griffin has played at the highest level and he was just what we needed on Saturday.

“He came on and helped calm the team down and his experience will be vital over the last four games.”
