NEIL Young has been praised for the unseen work he does  to make Chester FC tick on the pitch.

Secretary Calvin Hughes believes the achievements of the Blues boss are just reward for the ‘incredible’ amount of effort he puts in behind the scenes.

Hughes, who has supported Chester since the 1970s, said: “I’ve got to know Neil pretty well since I took over from John Davies as the club’s secretary 12 months ago and at times I don’t understand how he copes.

“He’s got a pressurised job at Merseyrail, on the management side of things, which means he is part-time at the club. But he is on the phone to me every day and the preparation that goes into the team is incredible – it’s more like a professional outfit.

“Neil meticulously prepares for games. He goes and watches future opponents in midweek when we’re not playing and if he can’t get there, his chief scout Alex Hay will. It’s the same with new players. If he thinks there are players available on the grapevine who will improve the team he will make two or three visits to watch them play.

“He’s just totally non-stop on what he wants to achieve at Chester.”

Assisted by right-hand man Gary Jones, coach Gary Powell, kitman Jimmy Soul and chief scout Hay, Young led the reborn Blues to championship glory last season.

Because the success has continued in 2011-12, Young has been offered a new one-year contract that will be automatically extended by a further 12 months if he wins promotion to the Blue Square North this season or next.
