As City Fans United press ahead with plans to launch a phoenix club from the ashes of Chester City FC, the burning question of what the new team should be called has stirred up plenty of debate among supporters.

After canvassing its 1,000-strong membership for ideas, CFU yesterday drew up a shortlist of the four most popular options – as revealed in today’s Chester Chronicle. As voting gets under way to decide the new name, four Blues fans – randomly selected by CFU – put forward their case for their favourite choice.

Chester FC

THE name gives out a bold and clear message of where the club is from. It is the name by which the club was known for the majority of its existence, from formation back in 1885 right up to 1983, and therefore has strong historical links and significance.

This, combined with a real emphasis on the unique and equally significant Seals nickname, would be a real winner and provide the new club with a strong identity and a marketing tool in which to drive forwards into a new and exciting era.

City of Chester FC

WHAT could be closer to Chester City FC without actually being Chester City FC? City of Chester FC, of course!

It retains the fact that Chester is a city and that we are proud of that fact.

Using the word ‘City’ also conjures up the image of an established club with a long history.

While playing in the lower leagues it will help give our club much needed status.

Chester Rovers FC

WHY Chester Rovers? Simply, our roots and tradition.

After the unbelievably bad years we have endured recently, I feel we need to go right back to the beginning.

Chester Football Club was formed in 1885 when Chester Rovers and the Old King’s Scholars joined together.

The name gives us a new start but also allows us to build upon the history and the great memories we do not want to forget.

I personally do not like the AFC names and feel Chester FC is too close to Chester City FC, which I will forever mourn. Chester Rovers it is for me.

History, tradition and a new start. Come on you Rovers!

FC Chester

I BELIEVE we should follow the lead of the one of the biggest fan-owned clubs in the world, FC Barcelona, and have the ‘FC’ at the beginning of the name.

It’s also given the likes of Halifax Town new status too as they were renamed FC Halifax, so why not go for this fresh look?

I also believe that we should retain the name Chester, as to deviate from that would prove extremely unpopular among supporters.
